FILM

The wealth of our cinematographic cultural heritage – feature films, animation films, commissioned films, experimental films, documentaries, etc. – is still largely based on film material, whose long-term preservation, restoration and communication present major challenges in the digital age. The disappearance of analog film, together with the specialist laboratories and corresponding know-how, also raises urgent questions.

ACTIVITIES

Cinematography is an art that is scarcely more than a century old. A large number of films have now disappeared, victims either of fire, accidental destruction, chemical decomposition, mechanical wear and tear or simply of being discarded.

Memoriav activities in film

  • Preservation of and accessibility to Switzerland’s film heritage
    by organising «urgent measures» for endangered films;
    by initiating and supporting projects – for example by taking inventories of collections or restorations;
    by improving the accessibility to films – for example by making copies for reference purposes in archival institutions.

  • Heightening public awareness through special campaigns and the presentation of films that have been saved (for example from the series: «Trésors des archives» in collaboration with the national film archive).
  • Organisation and coordination of a excellence network, in which conservation and archiving experts tackle the preservation of the cinematic cultural heritage of Switzerland.
