Caring for photographic materials:

An ATR-FTIR and ESEM study on magnetic tapes for the assessment of the degradation of historical audio recordings
Federica Bressan/Roberta Bertani/Claudio Furlan/Fabio Simionato/Sergio Canazza (University of Padova, Italy). An ATR-FTIR and ESEM study on magnetic tapes for the assessment of the degradation of historical audio recordings. Journal of Cultural Heritage 18 (2016) 313–320.
Abstract This article presents some approaches for chemical and physical characterization of materials (ATR-FTIR and ESEM) applied to a specific category of cultural material, magnetic tapes. Analogue recording on magnetic tape has been the main technique for capturing sound for about five decades in the past century. Most of our collective memory is therefore stored on this type of medium, which is unfortunately degrading very fast. The past twenty years have witnessed a true rush to digitization in order to save the information stored on tape, but many aspects of the physical recovery of damaged carriers are still performed without solid scientific knowledge, leaving space for improvised treatments with unexpected ill effects. The main motivations for this study are that the preservation of sound recordings is an urgent matter that belongs to the field of Intangible Cultural Heritage preservation, the scientific literature on the subject is scarce and little known by the non-scientific archival world, and the documented approaches to tapes recovery are currently fragmented and do not provide an exhaustive reference for the operators in this field. The analyses presented in this article aim at paving the way for the establishment of a scientific protocol for the safe recovery of damaged tapes.
Schweikert, Annie. An Optical Media Preservation Strategy for New York University’s Fales Library & Special Collections, NYU Moving Image Archiving and Preservation, 2018.
At Fales Library & Special Collections, optical media—that is, CDs, DVDs, Blu-rays, and even MiniDiscs and LaserDiscs—represent 15% of all digital data, but 86% of all digital objects. The amount of data accessioned on these discs has grown rapidly since 2013, averaging a 352% increase on average each year. The amount of data on optical disc across NYU’s Special Collections is expected to continue growing for at least the next few decades as donors conclude their careers and donate their materials. The fragility of these discs renders them inappropriate for long-term storage. NYU must extract the information on these discs before the data becomes inaccessible. This report presents an overview of the diverse and unique difficulties posed by optical media, an exploration of the tools considered by Fales, and recommendations based on local specifications.

The Atlas of Water Damage on Inkjet-printed Fine Art
Connor, Meghan and Burger, Daniel. The Atlas of Water Damage on Inkjet-printed Fine Art. Image Permanence Institut IPI, New York 2016.
This atlas is intended to help readers become aware of the various ways that inkjet prints can be harmed during water emergencies. Each page highlights a different form of water damage that can affect inkjet-printed photographs and fine art. The preferred term for each type is given followed by a brief definition. The accompanying images illustrate common examples of damage that can occur, from small spills that affect only parts of a print to major floods that may saturate entire collections of prints with dirty or salt water. Every water emergency will be different, so prior familiarization with all potential types of damage will help disaster responders understand what has occurred to an object as well as how best to react to and recover their materials during the actual event.

Harvey, Ross and Mahard, Martha R. The Preservation Management Handbook. A 21st-Century Guide for Libraries, Archives, and Museums. Lanham: Rowman and Littlefield, revised 2020.
Cultural heritage professionals – museum curators, museum professionals, archivists and librarians – work with their specialized knowledge to prioritize the needs of their collections. Preservation managers draw on experts in climate control, fire safety, pest management and more in developing the large overview of a collection and its needs. And all the special materials within the collections have their experts too. Here, in one volume, is a wide range of topic-specific expertise that comprises both an enduring text for preservation students as well as an essential one-stop reference for cultural heritage professionals—particularly those in small- to medium sized organizations where resources are limited and professional help is not always at hand. The editors introduce the reader to the essential tools and principles of a preservation management program in the twenty-first century, addressing the realities of diverse collections and materials, and embracing the challenges of working with both analog and digital collections. The sections on planning and managing a preservation program contain the basic starting point for any kind of collection, regardless of size and content. Written with the small collection in mind, the principles are nevertheless scalable and widely applicable.

The aim of the Digital Preservation Coalition is to secure the preservation of digital resources in the UK and to work with others internationally to secure our global digital memory and knowledge base.
« Electronic resources are a central part of our cultural and intellectual heritage, but this material is at risk. Digital memory needs constant management, using new techniques and processes, to contain such risks as technological obsolescence. Risk begins before the digital record is created and continues for as long as the digital object needs to be retained. Digital preservation is too big an issue for individual institutions or even sectors to address independently. Concerted action at both national and international level is required. DigitalPreservationEurope, building on the earlier successful work of ERPANET, facilitates pooling of the complementary expertise that exists across the academic research, cultural, public administration and industry sectors in Europe. »
DPE fosters collaboration and synergies between many existing national initiatives across the European Research Area. DPE addresses the need to improve coordination, cooperation and consistency in current activities to secure effective preservation of digital materials.

Music archives are home to a treasure trove of audio. And the contents are not only music – videos, books, documents, manuscripts and musical instruments are all part of Europe’s cultural heritage. But due to lack of interoperability between data catalogues, this material often lies hidden from the outside world. The two-year EU-funded project initiated in September 2006, addresses the problem. Partners will provide copies of their metadata to be made available via the DISMARC website, and all data will be searchable from one point of access.

DPN Digital Preservation Curriculum (AVPreserve)
This workshop curriculum will equip participants with a set of skills and knowledge that will enable them to enact programmatic digital preservation within their organization and is focused on equipping organizations with the capability to implement and manage a digital preservation program. The workshop modules present the requirements of a digital preservation ecosystem from two parallel viewpoints: governance and program management as well as asset management.
Each of the six modules is estimated to require approximately two hours and it is suggested that the workshop take place over two full days. The modules are:
• Enabling Programmatic Digital Preservation
• Selection
• Preparing for Submission
• Submission & Ingest
• Post-Submission
• Sustainability

European Commission on Preservation and Access ECPA
The European Commission on Preservation and Access ECPA was established in 1994 to promote activities aimed at keeping collections in European archives and libraries accessible over time. Books, documents, photographs, films, tapes and disks are all subject to decay. The digital revolution has introduced new problems of obsolescence of soft- and hardware. In order to keep our documentary heritage available for future generations of users, large-scale programmes must be developed for its preservation. The ECPA acted as a European platform for discussion and cooperation of heritage organizations in areas of preservation and access.
This project ended in July 2008. The project website is available thanks to the InternetArchive. It includes informations on important projects:

Pepe Fischer, Saro. Bestandserhaltung im Film-/Videoarchiv des Schweizer Fernsehens, Chur 2010 (Churer Schriften zur Informationswissenschaft, 42)
Abstract
Publikation

The Preservation Self-Assessment Program (PSAP) is a free online tool that helps collection managers prioritize efforts to improve conditions of collections. Through guided evaluation of materials, storage/exhibit environments, and institutional policies, the PSAP produces reports on the factors that impact the health of cultural heritage materials, and defines the points from which to begin care.
Any organization that collects paper documents, photographic and image materials, and audiovisual media could benefit from the PSAP, including library special collections, archives, museums, and historical societies. Like the Audiovisual Self-Assessment Program (AvSAP) which preceded it, the PSAP is designed to assist in organizations where little to no prior preservation training exists.
The PSAP was developed by the University of Illinois Libraries through the generous support of the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

Schnetzer, Dominik.
From Grain to Pixel: The Archival Life of Film in Transition
Fossati, Giovanna. From Grain to Pixel: The Archival Life of Film in Transition, Amsterdam University Press, 2009.
Film is in a state of rapid change, a transition where analog (photochemical) film is being gradually replaced by digital film. Most think that digital pro-jection will substitute traditional film projection already within a few years. This transition, evident across media in both the commercial and the cultural fields, profoundly affects not only the practice of filmmaking and distribu-tion, but also the practice of film archiving, and the theoretical conceptualiza-tion of the medium.

Marketing, communication, documentation, patrimoine…

Rochat, Rebecca. Typology guide. Lacquer discs collection of Radio-Lausanne and Radio-Genève / Guide typologique. FONSART 2019.
Between 1930 and 1960, radio contents were mainly recorded on lacquer transcription discs, consisting of a thin layer of lacquer applied on aluminium, PVC, paper or glass substrates. Due to their composite structure and lack of standardisation in manufacturing, these carriers have proved to be very unstable and deteriorate rapidly.
Radio Télévision Suisse’s collection of 85,000 lacquer discs is of substantial significance for local communities in Switzerland, in addition to historical and political values with the coverage of international events. The collection also holds technological importance and includes a wide range of international manufacturers used in broadcasting services, namely Presto, Audiodiscs, Pyral, MSS, Simplat and Thorens.
Initiated by FONSART in 2012, the digitisation project aims to ensure the preservation and permanent accessibility of RTS lacquer discs, and raise awareness of this sensitive sound heritage. A typological research studied the different types of instantaneous discs in the collection as well as patents on manufacturing technologies.

Vera and Donald Blinken Open Society Archives (OSA)
The Open Society Archives (OSA) at Central European University (CEU) is a repository of important collections, primarily related to the history of the Cold War and grave international human rights violations, and a laboratory of archival experiments on new ways of assessing, contextualizing, presenting, and making use of archival documents.
OSA Archivum’s audiovisual collection comprises both archival holdings and material from our film library. As an audiovisual research center, we are actively collecting with an intent to establish a non-circulating video library comprising: regional propaganda; historical, feature and documentary films; regional TV news programs; historical home movies; and amateur footage—from the interwar period up to the present. Except in the case of some very important collections, OSA does not have the right to make most of the films in its care publicly available. These films and images can be used for research, exhibition, and educational purposes, and provide valuable sources for scholars—even when the images cannot be reproduced for copyright restrictions.
